12 Days Uganda Gorilla and wildlife safari Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Murchison falls National Park

On the first day of this 12 Days Uganda Gorilla and wildlife safari, our guide will pick you from your hotel and brief you on your Uganda safari tour. You will then set off for your adventure with a drive through the central region of Uganda. Our first stop will be in Nakasongola where you will have breakfast at Kabalega dinner. After breakfast, you will embark on your first safari activity, Rhino trekking. At Zziwa Rhino sanctuary, the rangers will take you through the safety briefing and you will hike into the wilderness in search of these rhinos.

On making contact, you will marvel at the elegance of these big mammals. You will practice the safety measures given during the briefing because these are wild animals. You will watch them as they eat and interact with one another. You will have the chance of seeing the different families. The sanctuary has over 35 rhinos.

After the rhino trekking, we will continue our drive through Masindi town where we will have a stopover for lunch. We shall then proceed into Murchison falls national park. After signing in at the entrance, we will head for the top of the Murchison falls. The roar can be heard a few minutes away and this will build up your anticipation. The beautiful views of the crashing of the water creates both a thrilling and calming effect. Here, the Nile River is forced down a 7 meter gap just to fall 47 meters into the Albert Nile. The top of the falls has different viewing points that allow you to experience it in different ways. The crashing of the water creates a spray that rises 100 meters into the air creating an ever present rainbow. It is spectacular. After exploring the falls, we will continue further into the park and check into our lodge for the evening and night.

Day 2: Morning game drive and afternoon boat cruise

After a restful night, we will have a very early start as we head into the wilderness in search of the wildlife. Breakfast is served as early as 5:30am, giving us a chance to catch the nocturnal before they flee from the day light. On the African savanna, we will have a chance of seeing plenty of amazing wildlife like elephants, lions, leopards, hyenas, giraffes, buffalo, antelopes and plenty of bird species. We will make a stop at the hippo pool to get closer views of the hippos and a small picnic while we are at it. This game drive will last up to 4 hours. We will return to the lodge for an early lunch as we prepare for the afternoon boat cruise on the Nile.

This boat cruise offers a relaxing yet thrilling experiences on your Uganda safari tour. You will be able to get closer to the wildlife on the banks of the river without being in any danger. Elephants and antelopes usually come for a drink in the afternoon heat. The Nile crocodiles and hippos can be seen on this boat cruise. The bird life on this river is stunning. Bee eaters, Amalekite kingfisher, woodland king fisher, shoebills, weaverbirds, grey heron, Egyptian geese and many more can be seen on this cruise. At the bottom of the falls, you will have stunning views of the Murchison falls. This cruise will last up to 3 hours. Day 3: Transfer to Kibale National Park

On this day of the 12 Days Uganda Gorilla and wildlife safari, we will have an early start as we transfer from Murchison falls national park to Kibale national park. The drive is scenic and offers amazing views of the Albertine escarpments. We will have beautiful views of Lake Albert as we drive up the winding roads. We will have a lunch stopover in Hoima before proceeding on our journey to Kibale national park. The drive will take us through the local villages giving us a chance to see the life of the local people and their ways of life. The tea plantations and papyrus swamps are some of the views on this scenic drive. In Fort Portal, we will have amazing views of the Rwenzori Mountains commonly known as “mountains of the moon”. On arrival, we will check into the lodge and relax for the evening.

Day 4: Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest& Bigodi wetland visit

We will have an early morning start as we prepare to go for chimpanzee trekking in the rain forest. The chimpanzee share 98% DNA with humans and are considered our closest relatives. We will head to the park headquarters for a briefing about the rules and regulations for chimpanzee trekking. Kibale forest has 13 species of primates and they include; chimpanzee, white and black colobus monkeys, golden monkeys, L’hoest’s monkeys, red ailed monkeys, grey checked mangabeys, bush babies and many bird species.

The whistling of the wind in the trees, chirping sounds of the birds and the smell of the forest all contribute to the serenity of the forest. On locating the primates, we will observe them at the safe distance recommended during the briefing. We will watch them eat, play and groom. You will have the opportunity to take pictures and videos after disabling the flash mode on your camera. This may scare them into aggression. Bird species like yellow spotted nictor, crowed eagle and little green bul can be seen on this chimpanzee trek. We will later return to the lodge for lunch and some relaxation.

After lunch and some much needed relaxation, we will head out to the Bigodi wetland sanctuary. This is a community owned project that works in preserving the environment. Here, we will get to see more primates like the red tailed monkeys, baboons, bush bucks, mongoose, otters, bush pigs and many more. Bird species like the great blue turaco and green breasted pitta can be found in this wetland. We will later return to the lodge for a relaxing evening on this Uganda safari tour.

Day 5: Travel to Queen Elizabeth National Park

On this day of the 12 Days Uganda Gorilla and wildlife safari, we will have a lazy breakfast as we recuperate from the previous day’s safari activities. In the mid-morning, we will check out of the lodge and transfer to Queen Elizabeth national park. The drive offers spectacular views of the Rwenzori Mountains. On a clear day, we will be able to see some of the snow capped peaks of the Mountain. On arrival in Queen Elizabeth, we will check into the lodge and enjoy our lunch.

Later in the evening, we will embark on a crater drive. This drive takes us through the crater lakes that were formed as a result of the volcanic activity that formed the Rwenzori Mountains. Sadly, we shall not be able to swim because of the sulphur in the crater lakes. With the magnificent mountain as a back drop, we shall have the chance to take epic pictures of this Uganda safari tour. We will later return to the lodge for overnight.

Day 6: Game drive & afternoon boat cruise

Proceeding a restful night, we will have an early start as we head onto the savanna plains in search of the wildlife. The savannah grasslands of Queen Elizabeth offer a unique terrain that supports plenty of wildlife. On the Kasenyi plains of Queen Elizabeth, we shall be able to see elephants, lions, leopards, hyenas, buffalo, kobs, warthogs and many more wildlife. We will visit the Kasenyi Crater Lake where the local people mine salt. A craft market inside the park will give the opportunity to buy souvenirs for friends and family. This drive will last up to 4 hours and we will the return to the lodge for an early lunch.

If we are lucky, we may find herds of elephants as they go for a drink from the channel. On the boat cruise, we will have close encounters with elephants, crocodiles and buffaloes by the banks of the river, hippos and plenty of bird species like storks, herons, king fishers and many more. This cruise will last 2 hours. We will then return to the lodge for the evening and night.

Day 7: Morning game drive and transfer to Bwindi

On the morning of this 12 Days Uganda Gorilla and wildlife safari, we will have a morning game drive before departing for Bwindi impenetrable national park. This game drive gives us the chance to see the wildlife we may missed the previous day. More to that, we get to watch those we might have seen at our own pace. This game drive will be shorter in preparation for our transfer to Bwindi impenetrable national park. This game drive will take place in the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth national park which is famous for its tree climbing lions. Other animals we hope to see are elephants, kobs, monkeys and many more. We will have an early lunch before proceeding with our journey to Bwindi Impenetrable national park.

The drive to Bwindi offers scenic views of terraced hills of the western rift valley. We will get to experience the agricultural methods of the local people who dwell on the slopes of the rift valley. On arrival in Bwindi, we will check into the lodge and enjoy the views and sounds of the impenetrable forest.

Day 8: Gorilla trekking and cultural tour

On this day of the 12 Days Uganda Gorilla and wildlife safari, we go gorilla trekking. In anticipation, we will have a warm breakfast and quickly head to the park headquarters for the gorilla briefing. Here, we will be taken through the rules and regulations of gorilla trekking. These rules help in protecting both the gorillas and the guests. We will be assigned to different groups of 8, each trekking a different gorilla family. With rangers and guides, we will venture into the forest in search of the gentle giants. The forest is thick and the trek is adventurous. Upon making contact with the gorillas, we will keep a safe distance of 7 meters, observing them as they eat, nurse, play and groom each other. Remember, we have 1 hour with them. We will take pictures and videos and enjoy the sight of these gentle giants.

Uganda gorilla trekking safaris Gorilla trekking takes 2-6 hours depending on the location of the gorilla families. We will then return to the lodge.Later in the evening, we will have the chance of interacting with the indigenous people, the Batwa. These are the forest people that dwelt in these forests before it was designated a national park. They now live in communities outside the park. We will learn their way of life through their music, dances, food and traditions. After the cultural tour, we will return to the lodge for the evening.

 

 

Day 9: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

After a successful gorilla trek on your Uganda safari tour, you will surely need a down time. We will bid farewell to the impenetrable forest and head for Lake Bunyonyi. The drive through the forest will bring sad moments. However, the rolling and terraced hills will bring a smile on your face. We will drive to Kabale town and then Lake Bunyonyi. On arrival, you will marvel at the beauty of the lake. You will check into the lodge in time for lunch. After lunch, we will take a canoe ride and visit the different Islands on Lake, 29 in total.

Day 10: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park

After a hearty breakfast, we will depart Lake Bunyonyi and transfer to Lake Mburo national park. The drive is characterized by amazing views of hair pins bends, amazing views of rolling and terraced hills. We will make a few stops for fresh vegetables and fruits by the road side markets. We will have lunch at Igongo cultural center before proceeding to Lake Mburo national park. On arrival, we will check into the lodge and relax, enjoying the beautiful views of the African wilderness. Lake Mburo is the smallest national park in Uganda yet it packs a punch when it comes to wildlife. The park is known for its biggest herds of Zebra and Impala.

Day 11: Game drive

As your Uganda safari tour nears to an end, we will have a game drive in Lake Mburo national park. Unlike other national parks in Uganda, Lake Mburo national park is mainly a wood land. With few predators, the number of wildlife has flourished. The herds of Zebra, impala and eland is impressive. Other species that are found here include giraffes (that feed on tall acacia trees), topi, hyenas, leopards, bush bucks, water bucks, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles and many more.Uganda safari tours

The game drive will last up to 4 hours and we will return to the lodge for a relaxing afternoon. Day 12: Return to Kampala/Entebbe

On the last day of your 12 Days Uganda Gorilla and wildlife safari, we will check out of the lodge and head back to Kampala. We shall make a stop at the equator where we will take pictures by the equator monument and do some experiments to determine the different hemispheres. We will be able to buy more art and crafts from the local people as you enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee. We will proceed to Kampala and the guide will drop you at your hotel or airport in time for your flight. That will mark the end of your 12 Days Uganda Gorilla and wildlife safari.
